Finch is an app dedicated to self-care, featuring goal management and pet nurturing functionalities. This adorable and fun app helps users grow by achieving small daily goals, which is exactly what I was looking for after reading “Atomic Habits.” It has truly helped me establish a more regular lifestyle and good habits. I highly recommend it to everyone!
About Finch
I’m someone who really values time management.
If you’ve seen my previous piece on Notion Case Study and Tutorial: Using Notion for Work and Time Management , or if you’ve glimpsed my personal Google calendar, you’d probably understand just how much I love time management XD
But recently, when asked about how I manage my time, I’ve actually been recommending Finch, an app I’ve been using since the start of 2024.
Because managing the time and progress of personal life and work is certainly important, but what’s even more crucial is how to settle one’s mind and body and establish good habits.
Finch happens to perfectly meet all these needs of mine.
I stumbled upon this app by chance on Google Play, where it boasts high ratings of 5 and 4.9 stars on both platforms. Its adorable interface and overwhelmingly positive reviews piqued my interest, so I downloaded it.
And indeed, it lived up to my expectations XD

Who are Finch’s target users?
To be honest, Finch is suitable for all kinds of people.
Interestingly, many users in the Google Play reviews mention that they have various conditions like “ADHD,” “depression,” “procrastination,” “anxiety,” and so on, but they all find Finch to be very helpful.
I’ve tried many goal management apps in the past, but none have lasted more than a week.
Some were too “manual,” leaving me with no motivation to keep track; others made me feel a lot of pressure after use, as if not achieving a goal meant “failure” or “punishment,” which eventually led me to stop using them.
But Finch doesn’t give me that feeling at all.
Finch’s mechanism is linked to pet raising, which keeps me interested in completing my goals every day;
and when I really need to skip a goal for some reason, as long as I jot down reflections on why I didn’t complete it, I still get a small reward. Plus, I can review the reasons for my past uncompleted goals later.
After all, goals are just goals, but our lives are always filled with unpredictable situations.
In short, I think Finch is suitable for:
- People wanting to establish good habits: In the past two months, I’ve truly managed to establish many habits that I previously struggled to achieve.
- People looking for a goal management app: Finch, while free, offers flexible and diverse goal settings that align with most of my habits.
- People wanting to improve emotional management: If you’re dealing with emotional issues, Finch also provides corresponding suggestions for support.
- People who enjoy pet raising: You can change your pet’s color, clothes, furniture, and even the country they travel to, enhancing your connection with the app.
But it’s not suitable for:
- People have severe emotional situations that need to be resolved immediately: Finch has emergency rescue numbers, but please be sure to seek help from the medical system. Finch does not have medical functions.
- People who need strict time management: This is a very “soft” app. Although you can set a reminder time, nothing really happens if you don’t complete it.
- People who don’t understand English: Although you can use Mandarin to create goals, currently only the English version of the interface is available.
Finch Features and How to Use
Finch is essentially free to use. After using the free version for two months, I felt that the free version completely met my needs; however, because it was so generously offered, I ended up wanting to support it LOL
Below are screenshots of the paid version, but the main difference between the free and paid versions lies in the paid version offering more clothing options to buy, more goal suggestions, or more Emojis to choose from, etc. However, these do not affect its core content.
You can use it completely for free. If you’re interested in the paid version, they offer a free trial for one month, and you can cancel the subscription when the time is up.
What’s even more heartwarming is that they have mechanisms in place to help those in need but facing financial constraints access the paid version. If you’re interested, you can participate in their events!
Below are some features and ways to use it.
Home
In Home, you can see your daily goals.
Goals can be big or small, but I would suggest following the advice from ‘Atomic Habits’: don’t start with overly ambitious goals. Instead, start with small habits and reward yourself. This way, it will be easier to achieve them.
You can set your own goals, but if you’re unsure, you can also have them created by the app (I’ll introduce Journey’s features shortly).
For example: “Step outside of my home” was one of the small suggestions recommended by them when I first joined.
Initially, I thought this goal was so minor it was almost funny; but after joining, I really did step out of the house every day, soaked up some sun, and interacted with others.
I then realized that such a small action could significantly help start my day.
So, don’t underestimate small goals; accumulating these minor achievements can have a great impact on yourself!
Its goal-setting feature is very comprehensive (available in the free version as well). For example:
- Goals reminder
- Notification time
- Goal repetition
- Number of repetitions
- Repetition frequency: For example, you can set which days of the week to repeat. For instance, I may have different goals for weekdays and weekends.
- Whether to repeat until the goal is completed
- How many times the goal needs to be completed each day:
- Single occurrence goal: Check off when completed
- Multiple occurrence goal: For example, if the goal is to drink three bottles of water in a day, the goal will be represented by a “+” to record the number of completions.
- Linking goals to Journeys (For more information about Journeys, please see below)
After completing goals, you’ll earn points. Once you reach 35 points, your pet will start traveling!
Your pet can fly around the world (I’ve already been to Tokyo and am currently having fun in Taipei XD), and you can explore once per day.
After touring, your pet will report to you about what happened today. Based on your responses, your pet will develop different personalities. (Currently, personalities don’t affect your pet, but they will be recorded for you.)
Among many goals, Finch also asks you to choose one “important goal”; as long as you complete this important goal, you can gradually hatch the egg of a Micro Pet, so your pet will have a Micro Pet to live with you 🙂
Quests
The app’s goals include daily, weekly, and special objectives.
Achieving them is very straightforward; for daily goals, basically, as long as your pet goes outside, you can achieve it. Upon completion, you can earn Rainbow Stones (the in-game currency), which can be used to shop for items.
I’ve been using the free version until recently, but Rainbow Stones are really easy to come by, and I still haven’t run out of them XD.
I suggest setting up more minor goals; not only do they provide a sense of achievement, but they can also make your pet look pretty and stylish.
Shop
In the shop, you can buy pet clothing, change colors (head, body, wings, feet, beak, blush), furniture, and travel to different countries.
The prices of items in the shop are very reasonable.
There are mainly two ways to earn Rainbow Stones:
- Complete your goals.
- Enter Shop every day.
Friends
Friend feature. You can create your circle of friends, and friends can visit you or give you encouragement at any time.
Sometimes they might even stay and travel with you.
But rest assured, friends can’t see any of your content. We only see images like the one below, I guess the sparkles indicate a friend has completed a goal… maybe?
Bag
All items, such as clothing, pet homes, etc.
Lottery (your pet’s name)
This is the most important personal profile page, centered around your pet.
However, if you click on “Personality,” the content that appears actually reflects the personality traits you’ve obtained from how you usually respond to your pet.
You’ll also see the Micro Pets you’ve collected. These Micro Pets will hatch slowly when you invite friends or when you complete important goals.
Hamburger menu (the three horizontal lines in the top left corner)
If you click on the hamburger menu in the top left corner, you’ll come to this screen.
My Journeys
As mentioned earlier, you can create your own goals.
But if you don’t have any specific ideas or inspiration, Journeys can help.
For example, if you want to be more optimistic, focused, or have new goals for the new year, sleep better, etc., just choose Journeys, and there will be many detailed small goals for reference.
For example, if you want to establish new goals or habits for the new year – “New Year, New You,” the system will suggest goals such as the following.
You can add or delete goals according to your needs.
A person can have multiple Journeys, and you can receive rewards after completing them.
Also, you can include your own originally set goals under Journeys, so when you achieve that goal, you simultaneously complete the Journey’s objective as well.
My Goals
All your goals. You can adjust the content or add/delete them here.
Insights
Every time you open Finch, it will ask about your current mood and provide an encouraging message.
This mood record can be found in Insights, as shown in the image below. We can see our emotional fluctuations and changes.
Mailbox
Summarize the weekly status on a weekly basis and compare it with the past.
History
Summary of completed goals in the past.
After using Finch
Finch is truly the most satisfying app I’ve used so far.
I use it as a To-Do List in some ways (like reminding me to log into certain apps every day for check-ins XD), and I also enjoy dressing up my pet in adorable outfits.
But where its value really shines is –
I’ve really developed a lot of habits in the past month or two that I hadn’t managed to before.
Of course, there are times when I haven’t completed tasks, but in the past two months, I’ve achieved:
- More exercise: Walking 10,000 steps a day and taking the stairs whenever possible.
- Language practice: Taking at least one Duolingo lesson every day.
- Reading: Reading at least one chapter of a book every workday before bed.
- Improving sleep quality: Meditating before bed and avoiding phone use for the 30 minutes before sleeping.
- Establishing a regular routine: Waking up at 7:30 a.m. every day and going to bed at 11:45 p.m.
- Diet adjustment: Intermittent fasting on weekdays (168), avoiding fried foods, not buying sugary drinks, and no desserts (weekends are cheat days XD).
- Writing blog posts: Producing one blog post per month (and today’s post is how this one came about XD).
- Boosting work efficiency: Reviewing the past week’s work and checking next week’s calendar every week.
These are things I’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t achieve, but with this amazing app, I’ve managed to do them.
And, it’s truly completely free and achievable. It’s really so generous T_T.
I’ve placed Finch right on my phone’s home screen, so I occasionally open it to check how my Lottery is doing and see what goals I can complete.
