PCR Test in Japan for Taiwan Entry — Kinoshita Group Clinic to Arrival at TPE

Note: Taiwan’s COVID-era entry testing requirements have long since been lifted. This post is from July 2022 and kept as a record of that period. If you’re currently planning travel, check the latest official guidance from the Taiwan CDC directly.

Taiwan Entry PCR Requirements (2022)

Taiwan’s quarantine and testing requirements changed constantly with the pandemic. The best sources at the time:

Getting a PCR Test in Japan — Kinoshita Group

When I returned to Taiwan on July 4, 2022, a PCR result was still required. I chose Kinoshita Group (木下グループ) — it came up in my search results and was recommended on PTT 😄

Their reports typically come out the next day (I tested at 10:30 AM and received results around 12:00 PM the following day). Since Taiwan at the time required a test from within 48 hours of boarding, the safest timeline was:

Example: If flying back July 4, test on July 2 → results July 3 → board July 4.

Booking Online

On the site, scroll down to find a convenient testing location. Note that some locations offer free testing for Tokyo residents (都民無料), so it’s worth looking around.

I’ll use the Shibuya branch as the example.

On the location page, select the orange-red PCR検査 (PCR test) button.

On the next screen:

If you qualify for the resident discount plus this ¥1,000 add-on, your total comes to just ¥1,000.

Select your available date and time, then fill in your personal information.

After booking, you’ll receive two emails:

  1. Authentication email with your initial login password — save this
  2. Confirmation email with a consent/declaration form (誓約書/同意書) — you must complete this form before your appointment

At the Clinic

The following is based on my experience at the Shibuya branch — other locations may differ slightly.

Arrive around your appointment time. Bring:

A staff member at the entrance will check your consent form. Then head to the counter to register — show your passport and residence card, and pay the ¥1,000 fee. Card only; no cash accepted. I paid by credit card.

After payment, go to the testing booth. It’s a saliva test, with instructions available in Japanese, English, and Chinese. Follow the instructions, hand over the sample, and you’re free to go.

Getting Your Results

You’ll receive an email the next day. Log in to the website with the credentials from your booking email and check your results. There’ll be a PDF — click the button on the right and confirm your passport number and test date are correctly shown.

Heading Home

At the Japanese Airport

Check-in ground staff confirmed two things:

A digital copy of the PCR result is fine. If you’d prefer not to hand over your phone, you can print it.

After confirmation, everything else is normal boarding.

Arriving in Taiwan

After landing, you’ll want to swap to a Taiwanese SIM. Customs officers will ask to see the Taiwan Entry Health Declaration — after landing you’ll receive an SMS, and you’ll show that to officers along with the QR code. Keep the QR code; it’s also used when registering for a taxi or additional testing.

The customs officer at my checkpoint specifically asked to see the PCR result. After that, smooth sailing.

That’s about everything. Hope your return trip goes smoothly — feel free to ask if you have questions 🙂
